3D X-ray microscopy with polycapillary optics (online seminar)
Due to their ability to penetrate deeply into matter and short wavelength, X-rays provide a unique means to visualize the internal structures of objects with a high spatial resolution. Recently, a novel way of 3D imaging at submicron spatial resolution was demonstrated in X-ray optics laboratory (optiXlab) at Synchrotron Radiation Department. This new laboratory table-top approach combines structured polycapillary optics and a photon-counting hybrid pixel detector for a very efficient generation and detection of multiple (up to 1000!) micro X-ray beams that simultaneously illuminate a sample from slightly different directions. Use of multiple beams enables to: (i) increase the signal-to-noise ratio, (ii) obtain a depth resolved image of an object inside the focal spot of polycapillary optics from a single exposure, i.e., to realize the first X-ray plenoptic camera, and (iii) perform high-resolution micro-tomographic scans. The multibeam technique will be implemented at PolyX beamline, which is being constructed at the National Synchrotron Radiation Center SOLARIS.
