Population transfer between two manifolds in 4-level system of 87Rb

The preparation of system in a desired atomic state is important for advances in quantum technologies. Here we present a technique based on a stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP) for coherent transfer of population between two ground-state hyperfine levels of 87Rb. We show that despite the rich structure of the system, the system can be decomposed in three- and four-levels independent subsystems. We also show that despite the inability to selectively address the levels without the strong perturbation,  some degree of the control over the transfer between specific sublevels can be achieved.
